Nicole & Ray Leibman | About Little Purple Cow

Little Purple Cow's sterling silver jewelry collections uniquely blend the avant-garde with the traditional. Named for designer Nicole Joy Leibman's whimsical childhood love of collecting purple cows, each unique piece draws from nostalgic artifacts to evoke the most personal of associations. Cast in the finest Solid 925 Sterling Silver, the jewelry is hand-finished creating a high quality, high fashion design.

Established by father-daughter team Nicole and Ray Leibman, the idea for Little Purple Cow combines Nicole’s concept and creativity with Ray's years of experience in tableware and silverware design. The line was launched in April 2009 with its debut collection of spoon rings.

Since then, Nicole & Ray have continued to work together on several follow-up collections that now include necklaces, bracelets and rings inspired by antique and decorative objects.

About Nicole

“When painters look at a blank canvas, they don’t see it as blank. They already see a painting,” begins Nicole Joy Leibman, founder and designer for Little Purple Cow. “When I see certain antiques, like ornate silverware, or an old-fashioned typewriter I found at an antique fair, I can already envision it as beautiful jewelry.” In this way, Nicole has created a stunning jewelry line that comes from an inspired source within.

Nicole herself is a true artist, and she brings her love of art, travel and design into this jewelry collection. She spent years studying art and design at college, where she had the opportunity to travel to Italy to study painting and Italian fashion design.

Her innate passion was sidetracked when she surprised everyone by pursuing a law degree, and later landing a job at a high-powered law firm. “I was uncertain what to do after college, so when three of my friends decided to apply to law school, I thought I would to.” Then she flashes a mischievous smile, “And also because my parents thought I would never go.” During her years practicing law, Nicole brought her vivacious personality to the courtroom, even facing Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor, then a Justice on the New York Court of Appeals.   Nicole also tried to continue her pursuit of art through painting classes and trips to design workshops, but it took a noticeable backseat in her life.

In 2008, Nicole fell victim to the recession and lost her job. She used this as an opportunity to rediscover her artistic voice. Brimming with renewed passion, Nicole moved to Paris and reconnected with her roots in design.  The last piece of the Nicole’s new entrepreneurial venture clicked upon her return home when she stumbled upon a box of ornate silverware in her family’s basement. In a moment of inspiration, she realized that the intricate patterns of the silver could be transformed into an original, beautiful jewelry line.

Many artists have ideas but few are capable of turning a creative dreams into reality. Nicole was determined to make her vision manifest. Using her skills from law school and strong business sense, Nicole teamed up with her father, Ray Leibman, a veteran in sales and marketing for global silverware companies. Working together, they combined her concept with his experience and launched Little Purple Cow in April 2009. They named it after Nicole’s whimsical childhood hobby of collecting purple cows.

Since Little Purple Cow’s induction, Nicole and Ray have produced several collections which all use antique keepsakes as inspirations for fashionable pieces of jewelry. A key to a childhood diary, grandmother's heirloom silverware, vintage typewriter bars.  All crafted into dazzling collections of key necklaces, spoon rings, vintage silverware bracelets and typewriter pendants.
